Pair of Pinchbeck United junior sides shine at Royston Town tournament

Two talented junior teams from Pinchbeck United enjoyed success at the Royston Town tournament on Saturday.

Pinchbeck’s under-14 girls emerged as winners in what was their final tournament of the summer, while the under-16 boys finished as runners-up after losing a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

The girls were in action in the morning and were up against sides from North London and South Cambridge in their group.

They drew the first game 0-0, before a Courtney Walker effort secured a 1-0 victory in match two – with midfielders Annie Vayro and Nese Van der Werf impressing.

The confidence was flowing in game three, with Freya Peters netting a hat-trick and Walker adding another strike to secure a semi-final spot.

Colebrook awaited in the last four – and Pinchbeck soon went 1-0 ahead through a poked Walker finish. However, the girls were indebted to a pair of great saves from Rachel Gibbs as they held on to reach the final.

Hosts Royston went 1-0 up in that showdown, but Walker levelled. Then, with penalties looming, Walker beat a player and rocketed her fifth goal of the tournament into the roof of the net to win it for Pinchbeck.

The under-16s boys kicked off with a pair of 0-0 draws, with Nicky Haw and Jack Brittain impressing.

Game three saw Dan Taylor fire them to a 1-0 win and a semi-final place, with Austin Clarey pulling off a super save.

A feisty last four clash saw Ben Mansour score a great individual goal to earn Pinchbeck a place in final against Fairfields.

The pair had drawn 0-0 in the group – and that was exactly the case here, with penalties required. It went to 6-6 before Fairfields benefitted from a Pinchbeck miss to lift the title.
