No money for hanging baskets

There could be less foliage in Spalding town centre next summer than previously.

It follows no funding being found for more hanging baskets, a meeting of the Spalding Town Forum was told last week.
Following a similar warning last year, its members approached businesses to have the baskets on the proviso they watered them.
However it was reported back to the forum that many were forgotten about.
Town forum vice chair Coun Jan Whitbourn told the forum that attempts to get money for this year hadn’t been fruitful.
“It’s a real shame,” she said. “I think we’re going to have to get together and see if the shops will take it on but it’s difficult as last time a lot of shops didn’t water them.
“They forgot about them, which happens, as people are very busy.
“The big issue is about watering the baskets after they’ve been put up.
“I’ve tried, but there’s just not enough money.”
It had been raised that the Spalding Town Board, which has been set up to spend the £20m of government ‘Levelling Up’ funding awarded to the town over ten years, might take it on.
However forum chair Coun Rob Gibson said: “We looked into that but it’s public money for businesses.
“I asked the leader about the Spalding Town Board funding and they said it wouldn’t be there for baskets.”
The plants to be placed in planters in Spalding town centre are put in by South Holland District Council are not related to the hanging baskets and displays previously put up by members of the town forum.
