New lockdown for South Holland residents

South Holland residents are being told to stay at home as another national lockdown was announced.

Last week the area was moved into Tier 4 of COVID-19 restriction, but now a new lockdown for the whole of England has been announced by Prime Minister Boris Johnson in an address to the nation tonight (Monday, January 4).

Mr Johnson said that the public should only only leave home ‘for a limited number of reasons in law’ these being for essentials shops, work if you cannot work from home, for exercise, to seek medical assistance or to escape domestic abuse.

Primary, secondary schools and colleges are to close except for those deemed vulnerable children or those of key workers. Alternative arrangements for exams are also set to be announced, the Prime Minister said.

Those classed as vulnerable are being advised to start shielding again.

The Prime Minister also said that the NHS was aiming to have vaccinated all care home residents and carers, everyone over 70, front line health and care workers and the vulnerable by mid February.

MPs are set to debate the new measures on Wednesday when Parliament is being recalled.

The Prime Minister said the new measures were needed due to the new strain of the coronavirus which scientists believe is more transmissible and responsible for the rise in cases across the country.

According to the most recent statistics from the government, the rate of COVID-19 infection in South Holland on December 30 was 258.9 infections per 100,000 people.
