Nene Valley Harriers take route 66 with dominant East Anglian League victory

Nene Valley Harriers romped to victory in their East Anglian League match at the Embankment in Peterborough by an impressive 66-point margin.

The Harriers, who boast a host of South Holland members, recorded overall victories in the under-15 girls’, under-17 girls’ and senior ladies’ combined teams, plus the under 17 boys’ event.

The senior men finished a close second to Cambridge and Coleridge, losing out by just one point. The under-15 boys also finished second behind the same opposition.

As a result, Nene Valley finished well clear of second placed Cambridge and Coleridge in the overall standings.

The men’s senior throwers were in fantastic form, winning all their events by handsome margins.

Isaac Huskisson, Martin Tinkler and Simon Achurch achieved two victories apiece, while Robbie Shaw, – a medallist at the English Schools Championship last week – won the B shot putt with 13.64m.

The senior ladies went one better than the men as they won a staggering eight throwing events.

The Church sisters, Alison and Lydia, won the 600g javelin B event and the 4kg shot putt respectively.

Tiernay Augustine and Rebecca Hall also won two events each and Andrea Jenkins won the 4kg hammer, while Ellie May Stokes finished first in the 600g javelin.

Stokes also went on to win the B long jump.

Liam Brotherton also won the under-17 B shot and Matt Hornsby was successful in the B discus event.

Meanwhile, Nene Valley’s English Schools Champion – the Geoff Capes-trained Hannah Molyneaux – won the shot putt with a distance of 13.06m. She also triumped in the discus, with Macey

Carr first in the B shot putt as well as the B long jump.

Three under-13 girls, Lucy Molyneaux, Macey Andrews and Charlotte Martin out-threw their opponents.

There were also plenty of fine performances on the track.

The Hughes siblings had a field day, with the talented trio winning all of their events.

Lilly Hughes narrowly missed out on a medal in the English Schools Championships, but led all the way in the 100m and 200m, clocking times of 12.2secs and 25.1secs.

Her brother William, who is a Spalding Grammar School pupil, followed suite by winning the under-13 100m and 200m.

Other Nene Valley aces on winning form were Hana Knight in the girls’ under-13 800m, while the under-15 girls had a fine day on the track with first place finishes from Jada Dailey in the B 100m, Jasmine Allen and Kelsi Ellis in the A and B string 300m and middle distance runners Jess McKenzie, Amber Parks and Josephine Fortune.

Long jumper Olivia Thompson also leapt to victory, while Natasha Segal and Georgie Ivens won the senior women’s B 100m and 200m and Jasmine Oldfield was first over the line in the B 300m.

The talented Ivens made it a win double with victory in the 400m, clocking a time of 59.2secs.

Not to be outdone, Rosie Jacobs won the 100m hurdles to complete the club’s success in the sprints, while Emily Maltby and Devon Spencer won the first and second string triple jump.

Elsewhere, under-15 boys Ronan Rawlings and Ryan Olbramski were B string winners in the 100m and 200m sprints.

The senior men enjoyed their fair share of first places too, with Jake Berney and Julian Smith coming good in the 100m.

Max Butler and Sam Garmey did the double in the 400m, while Ashley Sandall and Joe Turner equalled this feat in the 800m. Jake Richardson was also first home in the B 1500m.

Nene Valley also won the under-15 boys’, senior women’s and under-15 girls’ 4x100m relays.

The final match of the season takes place at King’s Lynn on August 9, with Nene Valley lying third in the 18-team League behind Ipswich Harriers and City of Norwich AC.

Results: 1st Nene Valley Harriers 724pts; 2nd Cambridge & Coleridge 658.5pts; 3rd Hunts AC 468pts; 4th West Norfolk 356.5pts; 5th Peterborough Athletic Club 342.5pts; 6th Leighton Buzzard 182pts.
