Mum’s meeting with politicians

A campaigning mum says she’s ‘quietly confident’ of instigating a law change in memory of her murdered daughter.

Last week Annette Bramley visited the Houses of Parliament to meet with Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Safeguarding and Violence Against Women and Girls, Jess Phillips and Shadow Home Secretary Chris Philp.

They both gave their backing Holly’s Law which would involve the creation of a national register of people convicted of animal abuse.

Holly was murdered by her husband in 2023 and he had an animal cruelty conviction.

Annette, of Holbeach, says there is evidence that people who hurt animals are more likely to carry out domestic abuse.

“I feel confident I have the full backing of both Jess Phillips and Chris Philp,” said Annette.

“They were both accommodating and listened enthusiastically to Holly’s story and the argument for an animal cruelty register in Holly’s name.

“They are going to investigate how it can be implemented and what it would look like in terms of who would have access to it and how information would be shared.

“Obviously, there’s still a way to go yet but, I’m quietly confident it will become a reality.

“Without (South Holland and The Deepings MP) Sir John Hayes’s familiarity with both MPs and his contact with them, the meetings would never have taken place. I’m so grateful for the work he has put in along with his tremendous backing of the campaign.”

Annette’s petition – ‘Establish Holly’s Law: An Animal Cruelty Register for Domestic Violence Protection’ is on www.change.org and had received over 58,000 signatures at the time of going to press.
