More records roll as Nene Valley aces break new ground at London Games

Club records continued to tumble as a host of Nene Valley Harriers attended the London Games in Lee Valley over the weekend.

The meeting was for the under-13, under-15 and under-17 age groups – with the older athletes in action this coming weekend.

On Saturday, Josh Akinwumi ran his first round under-17 60m hurdles and came out the blocks slowly.

He soon got into his stride and charged through to win his heat in 8.50secs – a new club record and the third-fastest of the round.

The second round of races were two hours later and Akinwumi, now matched with the seven fastest first round times, came out the blocks well.

He hit the second hurdle, but that didn’t stop him finishing fourth in a time of 8.45secs, lowering the club record and his personal best (PB) again.

Meanwhile, Ella Robinson ran the under-15 girls’ 800m and went with the eventual winner of the race, finishing second with a time of 2.28.74mins.

That was a new club record and a massive 12 seconds quicker than her previous outdoor best time for the distance.

The day before Kelsi Ellis managed the same feat in the under-17 ladies’ 800m, beating her time from the same meeting last year by 11 seconds.

Her time of 2.28.13mins set a new club indoor record and new PB indoor time.

Jasmine Allen was competing in the same events as she had for the Northern Championships and once again had to go straight from her under-17 long jump to the 60m.

In the long jump she had been frustrated by the run up – and on one of the only times when she managed to hit the board, it was given as a foul. She still recorded a good 4.82m.

Allen struggled to get going in the 60m, but still recorded a respectable time of 8.45secs. In the second round of races she improved this time to 8.40secs in an extremely close race from the gun.

Six of the seven athletes started simultaneously, but it was Allen who had the strength at the end to take the win on the line.
