Mobility scooters churning up park

A parish council has vowed to catch what it says are mobility scooter users churning up a town park and dog owners only going there to get rid of their animals’ poo.

The chair of Long Sutton Parish Council, John Clarey, said both were “serious problems” facing the authority highlighted at its most recent meeting.

Coun Clarey said that scooters not driving along the path and instead driving from one corner to he another were causing an “indent” in the park.

“There is a footpath round the park, it’s just a short cut they are doing,” he said. “We will try and catch the culprits.”

On the dog poo bins he continued: “A very serious problem is people living locally to the parks bringing bags of dog dirt and overfilling our dog bins.

“David Cawthorn, our vice chair, empties these at the weekend in his own time and has to take some out before he can lift the bag out.

“Bringing the dog dirt to our parks is a criminal offence and people could be prosecuted for it.”

Elsewhere the meeting was told that work on several trees had been carried out ahead of the recent storms with just one subsequently coming down due to high winds.

Councillors were also told vandalism problems were continuing at the parish council owned allotments including sheds being broken into and water butts slashed.

Meanwhile Coun Clarey also outlined that the council was working with the Rock Bus suicide prevention fund scheme and looking for an area in the town it could park up for a spell in Long Sutton.

The council is also to support the Men’s Shed bid to create a version for 11 to 15-year-olds.

Coun Clarey said: “It’s a fantastic idea to help youths in need of another avenue in life.”

In June the council is organising a fun day to celebrate the Queen’s Jubilee Weekend on Winfrey Park on Sunday June 5 from midday.

It’s to follow the lighting of the beacon in the town on Thursday, June 2.
