Mixed bag for last week of season

City of Peterborough 2nd 3
Spalding Ladies’ 1st 3
Goals: Charlotte Maplethorpe, Maddie Haunch (2).
Jemima Hitcham made some great saves, with the Spalding defence working well to clear. Karen Timby made a great pass into Maplethorpe who won a penalty stroke. She slotted the ball in to put Spalding 1-0 up.
Peterborough equalised before half time but Spalding started the second half well. Evie Maltby picked out Maplethorpe who made a great run resulting in a short corner.
Ellie Holland received the ball, slipping it to Georgina Maplethorpe who played it in for Haunch to slot away.
Again, Peterborough were able to equalise after a ball was deflected in.
Spalding kept pushing for another goal which came when Haunch made a great run past the Peterborough defence.
Spalding worked hard to hold on, but Peterborough equalised a third time.

Spalding Ladies’ 1st 0 Norwich Dragons 1st 10
Defending well in the first half, Spalding were able to keep the Norwich chances out but as the half wore on, Norwich found the net on two occasions.
After the break, Norwich came out all guns blazing and created more opportunities which saw them put away eight second-half goals.

Spalding Ladies’ 2nd 1 Kettering 2nd 0
Goal: Kelly Tizzano
Spalding worked tirelessly with a multitude of attempts on goal but the first half ended 0-0.
At half time Spalding composed themselves and went on the attack against a feisty opposition.
With a long ball out from the defensive line, Kate Amess picked up the ball and sped off into the D striking across from the left to the right post. Tizzano got the final touch to ensure it passed the keeper.

Cambridge City 6th 0 Spalding Ladies’ 3rd 1
Goal: Sam Foston
Shortly after the first whistle, Foston scored, putting Spalding ahead.
Cambridge came back fighting in the second half and the game became more tense as both teams battled on, but the scoreline remained the same.

Blueharts 1st 1
Spalding Men’s 1st 3
Goals: Joe Rogers, Matthew Peach, Stu Cunnington
Spalding remained calm and composed and won penalty corners but failed to capitalise.
The half ended scrappy with Spalding being heckled by the crowd.
In the second half, from a penalty corner, Cunnington’s drag flick was stopped on the line, however Peach managed to tackle the opposition and squeeze the ball home to put Spalding ahead.
They doubled the lead when Cunnington’s dribble ended up with a push shot that flew past the keeper.
Spalding then faced the onslaught from the opposition and a reverse stick shot brought the score to 2-1.
Spalding held firm and a full pitch aerial found Rogers through on goal and he finished the game.

Spalding Men’s 2nd 2
Wisbech Town 2nd 3
Goals: Tim Maltby, Darren Grooby
Wisbech began stronger and went three goals up.
Spalding came out a different side after half time causing the Wisbech defence problems. They were rewarded midway through the half with a finish by Grooby. The second goal for Spalding came after a loose ball was slotted home by Maltby.
The final minutes were all pressure from Spalding, but they could not find an equaliser.

Ely City 2nd 1
Spalding Men’s 3rd 3
Goals: Glenn Richardson (2), Paul Pearson
Ely dominated the first ten minutes, taking the lead but Spalding started to string some passes together, exerting pressure, which resulted in a penalty corner.
Spalding equalised through Richardson scoring a drag flick. The pressure was raised further, leading to another Spalding corner. It was saved but from the rebound Pearson slotted the ball in.
More good play led to a long corner which allowed Richardson to strike the ball into the goal.
The second half was mainly spent absorbing Ely’s attempts to get a goal, but the defensive unit did not give them a sniff of scoring.

Ely City 3rd 4
Spalding Men’s 4th 4
Goals: Caiden Mountain, James Grant, Glenn Perkins (2)
Despite finding themselves four goals down at half time, Spalding fought back for a second half to remember.
Goals from Mountain, Grant and two from Perkins saw the team take a point when the full-time penalty corner was converted to level the scores.
