Man who smashed car window he thought belonged to someone else hit in pocket

A Crowland man smashed the window of a car he wrongly thought belonged to someone who had thrown his laptop over a fence, a court has heard.

Daniel Matthews, 37, of Broadway admitted damage when he appeared at Boston Magistrates Court.
Prosecuting, Paul Wood said Matthews had gone to his former partner’s home in Crowland on May 13 to
collect a laptop.

An argument ensued which resulted in his laptop being thrown over the fence and in retribution he smashed the rear window of a car belonging to one of his ex-partner’s friends and which was parked on the driveway.

Mr Wood said Matthews had been offered a police caution on condition he pay the cost of the damage, but he had not done so and so was now appearing in court.

In mitigation, it was said that following the argument with his former partner, Matthews had left the house and when he returned he found his laptop had been thrown over the fence and, wrongly believing the owner of the car parked on the driveway was the person who had damaged his laptop, threw a stone through the rear window.

Matthews was fined £150 and ordered to pay compensation of £450 and court costs and charges totalling
£119.
