Man accused of historic sex offences tells court he had ‘no sexual interest’ until ‘later years’

A Spalding man insisted he had no sexual interest in two girls who he denies abusing  when he was a teenager.

Barry Severn, 37, of Stonegate, Spalding, denies nine charges which are alleged to have occured between 2002 and 2009.

Giving evidence at Lincoln Crown Court, Mr Severn denied a prosecution suggestion that he carried out the offences after becoming curious.

“I had no sexual interest in anyone until my later years,” Mr Severn told the jury.

Mr Severn explained he did not have a girlfriend until he was aged 25.

He also denied having any interest in pornography while he was at school.

“I kind of found it repulsive,” Mr Severn said. “All we did was speak about video games.”

Mr Severn also denied a prosecution allegation that he “did what he wanted” with the two complainants.

“I did not do any of the actions accused of me,” Mr Severn insisted.

When prosecution barrister David Eager put to Mr Severn that he was a sexual predator he replied firmly: “I am not.”

Seven of the offences are alleged to have been committed against a girl aged under-13.

They include three charges of indecent assault, two counts of sexual assault, one offence of assault by penetration and one allegation of causing a child to engage in sexual activity.

Mr Severn also denies two further charges of indecent assault against a second girl aged under-13.

The trial continues.
