Lutyens memorial needs work

Work needs to be carried out on Spalding’s World War I memorial designed by Sir Edwin Lutyens.

The memorial, in Ayscoughfee Hall Gardens, was unveiled in 1922 and is Grade I listed.
But time is taking its toll, and remedial works need to be carried out, particularly to the plinth where many of the stones are ‘badly eroded’ says a report to South Holland District Council.
A long-standing problem of damp has seen stones erode. And a tarmac path which falls towards the memorial is not helping.
The report recommends resurfacing in a more permeable material along with the installation of a French Drain, if approved, located outside the line of the original stone perimeter which also needs work as some stones are eroded and others misaligned.
The application has been submitted on behalf of South Holland District Council and is accompanied by a specialist Heritage Impact Assessment.
