Moulton Harrox are on track to join neighbours Spalding and Long Sutton in the Lincolnshire Board Premier League after making a solid start to their South Lincs Border League Championship season.
Saturday’s ten-run win at Boston puts them second in the table after five matches.
Opener Flynn McMillan (26) held things together early on but it needed middle-late order knocks from Matthew Barnett (25) and Travis Harrison (31) to push them to a defendable 135/9 from their 45 overs.
Boston put on 41 for the first wicket and looked set for a comfortable victory at 70/1 before a collapse saw them slump from 107/4 to 125 all out in the 42nd over as Harry Lovell (4-22) and Matthew Rose (3-19) got into the groove.
Life is proving tough at the top level though with Spalding and Long Sutton in the bottom three and still looking for their first wins of the campaign.
Sutton scored 232 at home to Market Deeping but it was not enough to come anywhere near reaching their target of 307/5. A huge third-wicket stand of 180 between Josh Smith (162) and Hayatullah Niazi (54) was the difference between the sides.
Sutton also enjoyed a big partnership but the 154 put on for the fourth wicket by Davico Kruger (98) and Daniel Oldfield (67) comprised the only batsmen to reach double figures.
At Spalding, the hosts were all out for 172 in response to Grantham’s 293/6 with Nafis Shaikh (106no), Qundeel Haider (86) and Ahmed Raza (40) taking them from 59/3 to 286/5.
An 89-run stand for the fifth wicket between Keyan Gace (40) and Ethan Lawrence (39) briefly raised hopes of a comeback.
In Division One of the Border League, Long Sutton Seconds fell to a 23-run defeat at Market Deeping Seconds.
Tight bowling from Rob Simpson (3-38), Edward Barnes (2-11) and Joe Whitaker (2-16) prevented any of the home batsmen building a big innings, with all three of the other bowlers also claiming a wicket as they sent the host packing for 149.
However, in response wickets fell regularly with a late unbeaten 40 from Joe Whitaker proving only a consolation as Sutton succumbed for 126.
There was first defeat of the season for Moulton Harrox Seconds in Division Two as they fell to a 82-run defeat at home to Burghley Park Seconds. The visitors managed only two decent partnerships but that was enough to halt Moulton’s winning start to the season.
Matt Davies (35) shared a 59-run stand for the second wicket with opener Andy Briault (31) and then Simon Sherwin (62) joined James Bigg (42) to take Park from 87/6 to 172/7 on the way to 206/8.
Simon Juckes was the pick of the attack, taking 3-24 from his nine overs.
Moulton looked comfortable in reply at 47/1 but once Lewis Martin (24) and Joseph Broomfield (20) had been separated, the wickets fell rapidly as 92/7 soon became 124 all out.
Jim McIntosh (4-36) and Charlie Biggs (3-18) were their main tormentors.
Spalding Thirds conceded their match against Boston Thirds in Division Three.
Paul Edgeller (44) and Davico Kruger (35) were the standout batters in Long Sutton’s five-wicket defeat at home to Werrington in Division One of the Rutland Sunday League.
Ruari Drumm hit an unbeaten 100 as Moulton Harrox earned their first win in Division Four East with a 93-run success against Market Overton. He shared a 150-run fourth-wicket stand with Cameron Fox (81).
