LETTERS – Pylon concerns over birds

With regard to the proposed pylons from Grimsby to Walpole, I have lived and worked close to similar pylons which were erected in the 1960s.
During that time I have seen many birds killed by hitting the top single cable (earth cable). Very few birds fly through the main cables, always trying to go over the top.
I once picked up 15 racing pigeons in a 20m stretch, all wing stamped and owned by a Mr S Snowdon of Boston.
I have seen everything from starlings to mute swans killed.
These proposed cables will be a very big threat to the huge flocks of pink footed geese and whooper swans going to and from the Wash and Welney Washes.
National Grid must be aware of this judging by the deflecting balls on the top cable across the Welland at Spalding.
I have written to the RSPB with my concerns.
