I know, I know – some of you had probably thought you’d seen the last of me expressing my political opinions here, but I just couldn’t resist the urges.
Despite the election fatigue I am – and I’m sure some of you are – facing, it’s important as always to consider who we vote for with a level of seriousness that seems to escape politics nowadays.
I’m not going to tell you who you should specifically vote for, but I will explain, in my opinion, how you should decide who you will support with your mark on the ballot paper.
I personally believe that there shouldn’t be any “safe seats” in politics. The day a politician doesn’t have to fight for their seat is the day they can stop caring about the people they represent. I’m not saying that he doesn’t care about what we want any more, but I do question whether we might be better off giving the job to someone who might actually earn the right to keep it next time round.
We here in Spalding have had a solely Conservative MP since 1966, when the constituency used to be called “Holland with Boston”. Sir John has had the job since 1997, when we became “South Holland & The Deepings”. With all this said, I pose to you a simple question. Do you feel as though our constituency has improved or worsened during your lifetime?
If you feel as though it has improved, then fantastic, clearly our representative in parliament is doing something right.
If not however… consider it food for thought. Or don’t. It’s entirely up to you.
I know most of you will ignore this, and some will even share an angry word at the cheek of this young adult even daring to give an opinion.
How you cast your vote is your business, but I urge you – think it through, and remember, it shouldn’t just be about Brexit.
