Letters – Consider those promoting Brexit

It is interesting to reflect on some of those who have most steadily promoted Brexit.

Lord Rothermere, who owns the strongly pro-Brexit newspaper that called the Supreme Court judges traitors, lives in France, like his father before him.

The Barclay brothers, who own the slightly-more upmarket paper that also urges Brexit, live in Monaco and in the Channel Islands (not part of the UK).

Lord Lawson, Chancellor of the Exchequer under Margaret Thatcher, who posts pro-Brexit articles and letters in prominent newspapers, lives in France.

So, despite what they urge for the rest of us, they’re all pro-EU when it comes to their personal choices. (And no doubt they save very considerable sums between them on British taxes – which would have helped pay for the National Health service.)

The leading pro-Brexit Conservative spokesman is Jacob Rees-Mogg. He does not live on the continent, but it has just been revealed that he has recently taken out an Irish passport, through which he will continue to be a citizen of the EU.

His company has also opened a Dublin office, keeping its EU opportunities open. Again, he urges others to give up what he prefers to keep a bit of for himself.

Mr Rees-Mogg’s finance company was also recently shown to do a sizeable part of its business in Russia. He states that that is what his clients want. Not so long back, it was revealed that three of the leaders on one of the ‘leave’ campaigns were members of a group having close ties to Russia.

And now we learn that Nigel Farage and Arron Banks (financial supporter of Brexit) were in close contact with the Russians around the time of the referendum and later.

Russia is no friend of the EU, so is possibly grateful for the efforts of Brexiteers.

As I said, it’s interesting to reflect!
