I vowed I wouldn’t write another letter concerning the death trap of a road or lack of roundabout on the A16 because I feel no-one is listening. After Friday’s frightening experience at the Old Radar Cross Road, I’ve changed my mind.
At 6pm there was a very heavy flow of traffic both ways. I was coming off the Holbeach B1116. After five minutes I managed to get to the middle of the road and sat there waiting to go over towards Crowland.
I was unable to see if the road to my left was clear with the amount of traffic plus vehicles turning onto the B1116 leaving a blind spot. I sat for at least another five minutes, stuck in the middle of the junction. I must say it was becoming frightening, then a Vauxhall Vectra drew up alongside me on the red part of the junction.
When it became safe to go over, the other driver had lost patience and decided to go at the same time as me, which resulted in both of us with a limited time, heading on the same route. I had to brake to let him go first. I managed to get over, just. If I had been heading to Spalding I don’t know what would have happened.
Surely it’s time the Highways Department listened to the road users. I understand you can’t stop idiots taking their lives in their hands and putting other drivers at risk but we have already lost lives on this road – are we waiting for more fatalities?
Will speed checks be the answer? No. Everybody says it needs a roundabout there.
Will someone up in your ivory tower please listen before more lives are lost!
John Hayes MP and Gary Porter (Lord), your thoughts on this subject please.
