LETTER: Luke Hart’s words on domestic abuse resonated with me

I write with reference to the front page story (April 27) about Luke Hart’s bravery about domestic abuse. Well done, Luke, for speaking out for us women.

I am writing because I feel that I am in a situation where something like what happened to the Hart family could be avoided.

My husband moved out of our family home, but because the mortgage is in our joint names he keeps coming into the house and causing me emotional abuse. I have spoked to a women’s charity organisation and the police about how much his abuse is affecting me but they both told me that they cannot do anything about it unless it was physical abuse.
I really can’t believe this because emotional abuse is just as bad as physical abuse.

There have been so many reports of women’s deaths as a result of domestic abuse and there are many more cases not being reported because people feel there’s no point to report because you don’t get help anyway.
This is like what it used to be with rape victims.

Why is it that our authorities seem to wait for the worst case scenario to happen before they react?
