LETTER: Here’s the real churchyard

I offer this photograph taken today of ‘the real‘ Deeping St Nicholas Churchyard.
Sometimes the grass is delayed in being cut by the weather, the ground consistency or other churchyard priorities (this time the removal of large tree branches hanging over the main road).
I offer a sincere thank you to our church team and contractors who endeavour to keep this beautiful space of nearly two acres a place of sanctuary.
The upkeep of a churchyard of this size is costly – upwards of £6,000 per year – which is paid for by the congregation and a contribution from the parish council.
Small things can be really helpful though:
lRemoving Christmas wreaths
lNot placing bunches of flowers in plastic wrappings on graves to blow around the churchyard
lTaking rubbish home with you
lMaybe a donation to upkeep?
Take a quiet moment here to sit and enjoy nature while out walking and perhaps cast a thought for the small number of people putting much effort in to keep it accessible.
