LETTER: Bravo for Spalding beerfest – let’s have it more often

I am writing to say how pleased I am that the Spalding Beer Festival will run again this year, from the sound of it bigger and better than last year.

The town lost the spectacle of its flower festival, which drew people from far and wide and South Holland Council did not seem to have any alternative to replace it in order to bring the same large numbers of visitors (and their money) to the town.

I hope that this venture is allowed/encouraged to grow. There are a good number of top quality micro breweries in our area that we should be showcasing and supporting, the district council as the vanguard.
I’m not sure who the organisers are, but surely South Holland should be asking them to increase the number of times a year that they can offer this service to the shopkeepers and hoteliers of the town.

Why can’t they ask them to do an Oktoberfest event, stage a farmers’ market at the same time, etc? We have so many enterprising local producers that our Conservative council should promote and this seems to be the ideal opportunity.

I am not sure what rent rates the council charge for their agricultural holdings but, diversification of a portion of it into a festival ground would seem to be a way of raising vastly more revenue (in parking fees alone!), you have only to look at how much cash is made in car boot sale pitches over a year.

Anyway, stepping down from my soap box, I would like to congratulate the hard working and enterprising souls who are working to improve the town. I hope that they find this some small support and to repeat my hope that there are many more events like this in the future.
