League comes together for charity

The annual Spalding Open Darts Tournament returned to Spalding Services on Sunday, with players, supporters and sponsors coming together for a memorable day of competition and fundraising.

This year’s event carried special significance because it was held in support of Prostate Cancer UK, following league chairman Ian Tilley’s recent diagnosis. Mr Tilley underwent a 28-day course of treatment, prompting organisers to dedicate the tournament to raising funds for the charity.

The generosity of sponsors and participants helped make the event a huge success, with an impressive £1,400 raised.

Worldwide Fruit served as the main sponsor, while the Pinchbeck League provided additional sponsorship. Board sponsors included Drayman’s Arms, Pinchbeck FC, Mulberrys darts team, Spalding Constitutional Club, Spalding Services, Holbeach Services, Lincoln Arms and Ian Tilley. Funds were boosted with a raffle.

A total of 64 players produced a high-quality standard of darts from start to finish. PDC professional Scott Williams emerged as the overall winner, defeating Cambridgeshire county player Simon Wojtowych 5-2 in the final.

The semi-finalists were experienced campaigners Mark Waters and Paul Wade, both of whom impressed during their runs.

One of the standout matches came in the second round when Williams faced rising talent Leighton Bennett. In a thrilling encounter, packed with top quality scoring, Williams edged a 4-3 victory, with the pair combining to hit seven maximum 180s.

Chris Fidler claimed the highest checkout prize with a superb 164 finish. The furthest progressing youth players were Sid Stovold and Spencer Fage, while Lacie Brookin received the award for the highest-placed female competitor.

A plate competition was held alongside the main event, with Sam Roberts taking the title.

Organisers praised the efforts of everyone involved in making the tournament such a success.

Special thanks were extended to Sam Roberts and Ian Tilley for organising and running the event, as well as to sponsors, players and supporters. Appreciation was also shown to Adam Godfrey Simon Barnett, Mark Waters and Emma Hall for their assistance.
