Though the Spalding and District Table Tennis League’s season is just a memory and thoughts are turning to the AGM – September 12 for those who missed it – it was the main point last Wednesday.
That’s because the final of the Veterans competition was resolved at last.
With the event uncompleted at semi-final stage at the end of the season, it proved difficult to get the two finalists attending on the same night.
Richard Hammond and John Gilbert, members of the same team, have a history of hard-fought matches and this was no different.
Hammond took the first 15-13, only for Gilbert to fight back and take the next two comfortably 11-5, 11-3.
However, the battle continued with Hammond taking the fourth 11-7 and then the decider 11-9.
Also noteworthy was the best attendance for a month, with all the tables in use during the evening and some 20.
For anyone wishing to join in, access to the tables is from 7.30pm on Wednesday evenings at the Castle Sports Complex and there is a charge of £3 to help cover costs.
