Ladies’ hockey round-up: Four-some Sutton grab second win, seven on the spin for Spalding

After a rocky run of results, Long Sutton ladies’ 1st got back to winning ways in East Women’s Hockey League Division Two North West with a 4-0 victory over St Ives 2nd.

In what was their first win since another 4-0 success on September 25, they netted twice in each half at the Peele Leisure Centre.

The goals came from Jess Burton, player-of-the-match Megan Fey and a brace from Amber Jones, while a strong defence and a top showing from keeper Emily Braginton kept Sutton safe at the other end.

At the top, Spalding Poachers 1st continue to look invincible as they made it seven wins from as many matches so far.

They are five points clear of the rest after hammering hosts Cambridge South 2nd 6-2 with goals from Charlotte Maplethorpe (2), Harriet Mowbray, Mia Dewing, Evie Maltby and Ellie Holland.

After a first half that saw Maltby opening the scoring, it was 2-0 when Maplethorpe chipped in.

After the break Mowbray rounded the keeper to score and Holland finished strongly, then Dewing fired home a penalty flick before Maplethorpe rounded off the rout.

In Division Three North West, meanwhile, Spalding Poachers 2nd are third after beating hosts Wisbech Town 2nd 2-0.

Both goals came from the ever-impressive Karen Timby.

DIvisional rivals Spalding Poachers 3rd remain in the bottom two after losing 4-0 at home to Cambridge South 3rd, despite the efforts of stand-in keeper Lisa Ceaser.

Down in Division Five North West, Long Sutton ladies’ 2nd enjoyed a 4-1 win at Pelicans 3rd as Gemma Parr (2), Jasmine Smith and Lottie Dack netted.
