Ladies’ hockey round-up: Five-star Poachers slay Sutton in derby to make it 16 wins in a row

Charlotte Maplethorpe and Evie Maltby both scored twice as all-conquering Spalding Poachers 1st defeated South Holland rivals Long Sutton 1st 5-0 on Saturday.

Hennie Boekestyn also got in on the act at the Peele Leisure Centre as Spalding made it 16 wins from as many games in Division Two North West of the East Women’s Hockey League.

Spalding immediately put pressure on Sutton with some strong attacking play. Boekestyn slotted them ahead on ten minutes after Harriet Mowbray’s pass.

Poachers then won a short corner, with Maltby beating the defenders and keeper to put the ball into the corner of the goal.

Some great distribution out from the back then allowed Hermione Wright to use her pace up the pitch and find Maplethorpe who spun the ball around the keeper for 3-0.

Another accurate finish from a short corner by Maltby made it four in the second period, before Maplethorpe rounded off the rout when she ran into the D and fired home.

Down in Division Three North West, Spalding 2nd suffered a 2-1 defeat at Cambridge City 5th.

Roz Dennis found the backboard after just six minutes following a strong pass from Amy Naylor.

But Poachers were behind at the break thanks to a pair of penalty corners.

Despite Karen Timby starring, they were unable to find a leveller.

In the same division, Spalding Poachers 3rd were humbled 5-0 at home by Newmarket 1st.

The performances of Ali Willson and player-of-the-match Steph Wilson were the highlights.

Long Sutton ladies’ 2nd were without a fixture in Division Five North West.

Next fixtures (Feb 26): Spalding 1st v Cambridge South 2nd (2pm); St Ives 2nd v Long Sutton 1st (11am); Spalding 2nd v Ely City 1st (11am); Long Sutton 2nd v St Ives 4th (1pm).
