A Spalding 19-year-old has spoken of her journey teaching English in Honduras.
Jodie Rhodes was responsible for her own fundraising to make it possible for her to join a team of like-minded adventurous students in spending eight months of her gap year in Honduras before starting studies at Manchester Metropolitan University.
The Rotary Club of Spalding and Welland were keen to assist with her fundraising efforts, and she travelled to Honduras as part of a scheme set up by Project Trust, one of the original international volunteering charities for young people.
Jodie kept in touch with Rotary throughout her experiences in Honduras and described how, quite early in her stay she found it essential to be adaptable.
While originally brought in to teach spelling, after another teacher left she had to teach maths, reading and phonics as well.
She also travelled widely in this area of Central America and visited such places as La Union and Gracias, and further afield to Guatemala and Antigua.
President Barry Elliott welcomed Jodie on her return at a recent meeting of the club.
He said: “The Rotary Club of Spalding and Welland is always keen to be involved, when possible, in youth, community, vocational and international issues, and congratulates Jodie on her courage and sense of adventure in undertaking such a challenge in her gap year, incorporating all of these disciplines in the one exciting and rewarding adventure.
“We at Spalding and Welland are committed to helping worthy causes wherever possible, both at home and overseas, and would like to welcome new members to share in this, and to have a great time belonging to this wonderful social and charitable organisation.”
