INDOOR BOWLS: Spalding IBC Over-60s team avoids relegation trapdoor

Spalding narrowly avoided relegation from Division One in the Over 60s County League.

The battle to avoid the drop reached a climax last Thursday, with three teams – Spalding, Stamford and Boston – in trouble ahead of the final round of fixtures.

Boston needed six points from their away game against league leaders Lincoln A to overtake Spalding.
Boston got four points and Spalding managed to gain two points from their final game, leaving them three points ahead of Boston and thus avoiding the relegation slot.

At the halfway stage Spalding were only 11 shots adrift of the aggregate, but Lincoln B pulled away to finish 21 shots ahead. The match finished Spalding 77 shots to Lincoln B’s 98.
Spalding’s best winning rink was skipped by Chris Stagles, ably assisted by Mick Laidler, Ken Challans and Roger Perkins.
Captain for the day was David Lunn, assisted by Graham Hicks.

Men’s County League Division One: Spalding A beat Stamford at the Castle Sports Complex last Thursday in their penultimate match of the season.
Whilst Stamford were hoping to increase their chances of winning the league, Spalding still needed points to confirm their place in the top division next season.

It was Spalding who started well and they gradually increased their lead throughout the match, winning on all rinks to claim 18 match points, with a 71-shot win.
Rink scores: Graham Smith 19-13; Scott Dunham 21-14; Martin Spencer 41-15; Ash Caress 23-17; Paul Simpson 31-5.
