Hussey rues mistakes and potential red card as Corby dump Holbeach United out of FA Cup

Depleted Holbeach United suffered a hefty 4-0 loss at Corby Town on Saturday as their interest in the Emirates FA Cup ended for another season.

Stephen Diggin (26 & 35) gave the higher graded Steelmen a nice early cushion, before Elliot Sandy made it 3-0 on 48 minutes.

Ex-Tiger Jake Duffy rounded off the rout in the final minute on a day when manager Danny Hussey was forced to come out of retirement to feature as a late substitute.

Despite the scoreline, Hussey praised his side’s efforts in the wake of a major selection crisis.

He was, however, disappointed that Corby weren’t reduced to ten men for an incident that saw one of their players push Adam Jackson inside the opening 15 minutes.

Hussey said: “I thought that we did OK. We lost Joe Smith to injury early on, but Liam Adams came on and did well.

“I think they should have had a player sent off in the first 15 minutes or so – one of them pushed Adam Jackson in the face.

“We had Spencer Tinkler sent off for the exact same thing last week. You just want to see some consistency.

“Corby are obviously a good side with some strong players, but if we had 75 minutes against them with an extra man, it would have made a difference.

“The first two goals both came from mistakes from us, too, so things certainly could have gone differently.

“I think that, if we’d got in at half-time level and with a man advantage, things would have been very different.

“That’s not taking anything away from Corby, they played well. I know there’s a lot of money being spent there, but they still played well.

“From our part, I was very happy with the workrate and commitment from the lads.

“We were missing a lot of players, but they still worked very hard for the club.”
