Home must improve

A Holbeach care home needs to improve both leadership and safety, according to a recent inspection report.
Nutten Stoven, in Boston Road, was inspected unannounced by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) in June.
It was rated as inadequate in terms of being well-led and requires improvement for service safety.
“Care staff were not adequately trained. This meant people were at risk of receiving care from untrained staff,” the report says.
“A safeguarding system was in place; however, some safeguarding concerns had not been appropriately addressed,” it added.
People using the service, around 20 at the time of the inspection, said they were happy with their care and felt safe.
“We found people were at risk due to poor quality risk management and a lack of effective monitoring systems,” the report adds.
The areas of safeguarding and managerial leadership were focused on during the visit.
“We found evidence that the provider needs to make improvements,” the inspection said.
“Although people using the service told us they were happy with the care they received and they felt safe, we found people were at risk due to poor quality risk management and a lack of effective monitoring systems. Staff lacked knowledge on risks related to people’s individual care needs and this information was not always available in people’s risk assessments and care plans,” the report says.
Visitor COVID test results were not always requested and staff were either not wearing facemasks or were wearing them wrongly.
“Some areas of the kitchen, including cooking equipment, were found to be dirty.”
The inspector also found there was risk of potential harm due to poor quality risk management, such as swallowing ability and mealtime help.
“There was a lack of guidance available to staff in relation to the use of medicines,” the report says.
The home must address two regulation breaches.
