Home comforts help Spalding Golf Club duo win popular Seniors Open competition

Some 156 players from 36 different clubs contested Spalding Golf Club’s Seniors Open on Friday – and home advantage proved key for the top three pairs.

Spalding’s Rick Edwards and Brendan D’Abreo finished up as champions with a score of 47 points at the Surfleet course, with the podium also completed by players from the host club.

Wayne Wallace and Dave Halfteck took second spot on 46 points, with John Camm and Mike Murphy a further point back in third.

Ian Carroll and Ian Stockdale, from Belton Park, were the highest-placed visitors in fourth, having also scored 45 points. They edged out Bob Radcliffe and Peter Bingham (Spalding) on countback.

The nearest the pin was won by John Robinson (Sleaford), while the winners in the 2s sweep competition were Barrie Wigmore (North Shore), Wayne Wallace, John Beba (Spalding), Roger East (Sleaford), D Stephenson (Woodthorpe Hall), Jim Davidson, James Perkins (both Sleaford), N Cox (Oundle), John Robinson, John Gilbert (Oundle), Barrie Croxford (Swaffham), John Emmerson (Seacroft), Ron Green (Boston), Terry Toyne (Elton Furze), Colin Harness (Old Nene) and Mike Murphy (Spalding).

  • A total of 80 senior members entered the senior captain’s charity event last Tuesday, which took the format of four clubs and a putter Stableford competition.

Also there was a large raffle for which most of the prizes had been donated.

The divisional winners on the day were Howard Greaves (Division One) and Monty Brittain (Division Two), while the nearest to the pin prize was won by Dave Harvey.

Results: Division One: 1st Howard Greaves 39pts; 2nd Steve Watson 38pts; 3rd Ken Brown 38pts.

Division Two: 1st Monty Brittain 40pts; 2nd Steve Monaghan 37pts; 3rd Martin Chandler 36pts.

The event was a great success and – including cash donations and a large raffle with most prizes donated – a total of £585 was raised for the captain’s charity.

The monies raised will go to Beating Bowel Cancer, as chosen by senior skipper Mike Gould.
