Hockey round-up: Spalding 5th start year with another victory, Poachers 3rd held

Table-topping Spalding 5th returned to East Men’s Hockey League Division Six North West action with a 2-0 win at Cambs Nomads 4th on Saturday.

In one of only three games involving South Holland sides over the weekend, goals from Charlie Smith and Tom Pilgrim moved Spalding nine points clear at the summit.

It wasn’t such a good return for Spalding 2nd in Division Two North West.

They were handed a 3-1 beating at Cambridge City Vets, leaving them in the bottom two.

Jacob Drew fired Spalding ahead as they bossed the first 20 minutes, but that was as good as it got.

In the East Women’s Hockey League Division Three North West, Spalding Poachers 3rd drew 2-2 with Wisbech 2nd at Glen Park.

Alex Petty twice put the Poachers ahead, but they were forced to settle for a point.

  • Spalding Hockey Club started a walking hockey group back in April 2019 – and it is still going strongly despite breaks for COVID-19 and adverse weather.

The group plays weekly on Wednesday mornings (10.30am to 11.30am) on the excellent all weather pitch at Glen Park, Station Road, Surfleet (PE11 4DB).

The club are keen to encourage new members to join the hardcore bunch, which turns out in most weathers to have an hour of enjoyable social hockey, make new friends and get a little exercise.

The sessions are open to adults, male and female, of all abilities including total beginners.

Sticks are available if required and suitable trainers are recommended.
