Hockey round-up: Fyson fires four goals to inspire Sutton win, Spalding stay top

A four-goal salvo from player-of-the-match Josh Fyson steered Long Sutton 1st to a very welcome 8-1 victory over Cambridge City Vets in East Men’s Hockey League Division Two North West on Saturday.

After suffering two defeats on the spin, Sutton were determined to put that behind them and went 2-0 up after ten minutes through Fyson and Nick Ellis.

That became 4-0 by the break as Fyson and Tyler Hagan found the net, only for the visitors to pull one back just after the break.

Later in the half Cambridge had their keeper sent off, allowing Fyson to add two more to his tally. Both Josh Baker and Luke Proctor also netted to give Sutton eight goals and a shot in the arm.

Up in Division One North, Spalding 1st made it four wins from four after a 2-1 victory at a Cambs South 1st side that hadn’t lost at home.

After a goalless first period which Spalding bossed, they went 2-0 ahead in the second period when a good drag flick from Cunnington found the net and Joe Higgins finished well. South pulled one back late on, but the visitors held firm at the back and stay top.

Back in Division Two North West, Spalding 2nd are one of three teams without a point.

It’s four defeats from as many games for them after losing 4-2 at home against Cambs South 2nd.

A first half penalty stroke converted by Jacob Drew and a well-worked second half goal finished by Steve Rogers were not enough for Spalding’s second string.

In Division Four North West, Long Sutton 2nd are top of the tree after a fourth win from as many games. Despite having just a squad of 12, they beat Kettering 3rd 1-0 at the Peele Leisure centre thanks to a second-half Stefan Fox strike.

In the same division, Spalding 3rd enjoyed a 4-0 derby win at Wisbech Town 3rd. Ben Scholes put them ahead, before Harry Naylor’s reverse strike made it 2-0 at the break.

George Morris deflected home his first senior goal for 3-0, before Dave Burrell’s late effort sealed the win.

In Division Five North West, Long Sutton 3rd are in the bottom three after being handed a 3-0 reverse at St Ives 4th.

Down in Division Six North West, Spalding 4th are top with a 100 per cent record after their 5-1 success at St Neots 4th. Cameron Roy’s hat-trick and further efforts from Brendan Atkin and Andy Barlow secured a fourth win of the season.

p Spalding Poachers 1st scored eight goals for the second week on the spin as they thrashed City of Peterborough 3rd 8-0 in East Women’s Hockey League Division Two North.

Charlotte Maplethorpe (2), Harriet Mowbray (2), Hennie Boekestyn, Evie Maltby, Mia Dewing and Georgina Maplethorpe all got in on the act as free-scoring Spalding made it four wins from four to sit top of the standings.

In the same division, Long Sutton ladies’ 1st drew 0-0 at home against Cambs Nomads 1st at the Peele.

A Kate Amess goal couldn’t stop Spalding Poachers 2nd losing 4-1 at home to Newmarket 1st in Division Three North, while Spalding 3rd lost 5-0 at Ely City 1st.

Long Sutton 2nd drew 0-0 at Kettering 4th in Division Five North West.
