Hockey round-up: Cunnington treble as Spalding hit nine, five-star Sutton shine

Spalding men’s 1st made a dream start to the new East Men’s Hockey League Division One North season as they thrashed Bourne Deeping 1st 9-0 on Saturday.

A Stuart Cunnington hat-trick was their highlight at Glen Park, as they finished day one top of the table.

In Division Two North West, Long Sutton 1st also made a stellar start as they defeated rivals Spalding 2nd 5-2 at the Peele Leisure Centre.

Down in Division Four North West, Spalding 4th defeated Cambridge City 6th 2-1 to get off to a flier.

Willem Borst and Ben Scholes got the goals to get the mighty maroons up and running.

In the same division, Long Sutton 2nd sit top of tree after an impressive 6-1 success at Cambridge South 4th.

In Division Five North West, there was another victory for Long Sutton as the 3rd side knocked off hosts City of Peterborough 7th 4-2.

Meanwhile, in the East Women’s League, Spalding Poachers 1st picked up a battling 3-2 triumph at Kettering 1st in their Division Two North West opener.

A double from Harriet Mowbray and Evie Maltby’s strike ensured they made the perfect start.
Rivals Long Sutton ladies’ 1st slipped up 3-1 at Pelicans 1st, though.

In Division Three North West, Spalding Poachers 2nd cruised to an 8-0 success over City of Peterborough 4th with Karen Timby helping herself to five goals.

It was a tougher day for Spalding Poachers 3rd, though, as they went down 8-1 at Wisbech Town 2nd. Long Sutton ladies’ 2nd were handed a 5-0 walkover win by St Neots 5th in Division Five North West.
