Hockey round-up: Baker blasts treble to steer Long Sutton to thrilling victory

Josh Baker bagged a hat-trick as Long Sutton 1st claimed a big win in East Men’s Hockey League Division 2N on Saturday.

Basement side Sutton did their hopes of survival the power of good by beating Horncastle 1st 6-4 at the Peele Leisure Centre, with Baker (3), James Collingwood, Daniel Batten and player-of-the-match Ed White getting the goals.

Up in Premier B, Spalding 1st picked up a 2-2 draw at Upminster 1st to stay seventh.

Robin Edlington and George Halgarth got the goals in that one.

Spalding 2nd, meanwhile, enjoyed a comfortable 4-0 home win over Cambridge City Vets.

In what was their third win on the spin in Division 3NW, strikes from Tim Maltby (2), Michael Morris and Steve Rogers capped a top team performance.

In the same division, doubles from Josh Fyson and Luke Jackson steered Long Sutton 2nd to a 4-0 win over Bourne Deeping 2nd.

Further down in Division 4NW, Spalding 3rd suffered a 7-2 humbling at Cambridge City 5th.

Goals from Pete Wright and Dan Azzopardi were scant consolation for them.

There was better news for Spalding 4th in Division 5NW as they battered Cambridge City 6th 8-1.

Matthew Hicks, Steve Hart and Ryan Mountney all scored doubles, with Dave Burrell and Harry Maplethorpe the other scorers.

In Division 6NW (N) Charlie Smith’s goal couldn’t stop Spalding 5th going down 6-1 at leaders Leadenham 2nd.

p Long Sutton ladies’ 1st continued their fine form in East Women’s Hockey League Division 2NW with a 6-0 victory over St Ives 2nd.

Connie Gittins starred with four goals on Saturday, with Jemima Dodd and Emmie Gittins also bagging.

Spalding Poachers 1st drew 1-1 with Saffron Walden in the same division as Caly Priestley netted at Glen Park.

It was also 1-1 as Spalding Poachers 3rd were held by visitors Horncastle 2nd in Division 4NW (N). Alison Willson was the scorer.

Sutton 2nd lost 2-0 at home to COP 4th in the same division.
