Spalding racer Andy Molsom endured a mixed weekend as rounds ten and 11 of the Caterham Graduates Racing Club championship arrived at Croft.
The first race of the weekend went well for Molsom, who started on the front row.
There was an early safety car for a first corner incident, which kept the pack together.
When the safety car lights went out late in the lap, the restart surprised many drivers. Molsom, however, was aware and saw the safety car drive down the pitlane so a good restart ensured he kept second place.
Despite a late challenge from a rival, Molsom crossed the line in second place at the end of the race.
“The first race was a good result, the safety car restart mixed things up but I was watching carefully,” said Molsom. “The late challenge from Stephen Arnell was intense and took all of my experience to keep the local driver behind.”
The final race of the weekend saw the South Holland speedster start in fourth. Again, he got a good start and a busy first lap ensured he moved up to third position.
The next few laps were about chasing down Arnell for second place, which Molsom took on lap nine after some close fighting.
Swapping positions most laps ended on lap 14 of 17 when Arnell collided with the rear wheel of Molsom, going through turn one.
Molsom was pitched into the gravel trap and desperately tried to keep it out of the barrier, receiving a glancing blow against the wall.
He was able to get the car going again, but the steering was badly damaged so had to retire the car.
Molsom added: “The second race was an intense battle with Arnell until he collected me into turn one. It’s unfortunate, but I was a passenger once in the gravel, I did my best to minimise any damage.
“Luckily the damage was limited to the steering and cosmetic bodywork.”
Despite the non finish, Molsom retains second in the championship.
