More than 20 students from Spalding High school visited South Holland District Council on Thursday January 24 to learn about the importance of local democracy.
The presentation, from Coun Roger Gambba-Jones, portfolio holder for place, covered a wide range of topics, including the importance of an individual’s vote and when they can join the electoral register.
Coun Gambba-Jones also explained the work that councillors do, such as campaigning, functioning as case workers and acting as watch dogs in local government. He also outlined some of the other functions of the district council, including: food health and safety and licensing of businesses.
Coun Gambba-Jones said “We are delighted to see young people taking an interest in local democracy.
“We extend our invitation out to any other schools in the district who want their students to learn more about how their communities are run.”
