Helping fight killer disease

The South Holland Rotary Club has been back out on the streets raising money in a bid to eradicate polio.

The Rotary movement has raised millions and played a large part in tackling the disease, lowering the number of annual cases by 99.9 per cent since taking on the fundraising effort 35 years ago.

The South Holland branch has played its part and ahead of last Saturday’s World Polio Day was in Spalding Market Place collecting donations and selling badges.

You can also donate via text message.

Text POLIO 3 to 70480 to donate £3. Texts cost £3 plus one standard rate message. You can donate any other values, for example POLIO 1 for £1, or POLIO 5 for £5.

You will get a text back confirming your donation to South Holland Rotary Club.

The club is also hopeful Santa’s usual pre-Christmas tour of the town it organises will go ahead as usual in December.

A spokesman said: “Our elves have been busy getting our Santa Sleigh ready to hit the streets again in December.

“We’re just deciding how we can do it safely in view of Covid.

“Especially at this time, the children need to see Santa, we feel.”
