Help Spalding Town’s Mike reach his Advent Marathon Cycle Challenge goal

Spalding Town cricketer Mike Kearns has found a new way of keeping fit during the winter break – raising money for good causes.

Second team skipper Kearns, who is 55, has embarked on an Advent Marathon Cycle Challenge in which he is cycling the marathon distance of 26.2 miles every day for the 24 days of December’s advent.

The challenge has been taking place with the help and support of the staff and patrons of the Castle Sports Complex in Spalding. Kearns is hoping to raise £1,000 for his chosen charities – Sue Ryder, Thorpe Hall Hospice and Macmillan Nurses.

He said: “It wasn’t until my brother-in-law David Gordon was taken ill that as a family we were introduced to the amazing end of life care that both Sue Ryder, Thorpe Hall Hospice and Macmillan Nurses do.

“They are the most marvellous and wonderfully compassionate and caring groups of people who work under the most difficult of circumstances. I’m grateful to be fit and able enough to undertake such a challenge in order to give something back in memory of David, although I must admit that this challenge is proving to be a lot tougher than I had expected.

“However, all of this would pale into insignificance if it were not for the fantastically generous support of all sponsors and the Castle Sports Centre.”

The cycling finishes with the final 26.2 miles on Christmas Eve. Anyone wishing to sponsor him can pop into the Castle foyer or by going to: www.justgiving.com/teams/mike-kearns.
