Gun salute for historic day

South Holland continued to pay its respects with the majority of businesses closing to allow staff to watch Monday’s funeral.

Holbeach experienced a 21-gun salute thanks to Anglian Motel’s Harold Payne.

On Monday at 11am, to mark the start of the funeral service, he fired a specially adapted FH70 gun which was originally on the German Russian border and could fire up to 28 miles.

Harold and his team of helpers adapted the gun to fire using a propane gas bird scarer for the event, which gave a safe alternative and kept realism.

Around 40 people attended the event which ended with silence at noon.
