Grid looks to reroute cables

Applications for feedback have been submitted to garner views on rerouting existing overhead cables to the proposed new substation at Weston Marsh.

National Grid hasn’t got planning permission for that as yet, but it’s hoping to reroute two existing overhead lines into it.
In documents submitted to both South Holland District Council and Lincolnshire County Council it says seven new pylons would be built in total, while some that are currently standing will be dismantled.
One of the proposed reroutes will see 730m of overhead cable taken down with an additional 170m will be needed to get it to the substation – an extra 240m.
The other application refers to 900m of cable which would need an additional 70m.
The documents state National Grid is looking for both the district and county council’s views on the rerouting, known as Section 37 works and that it will be decided by the Secretary of State.
The documents state: “Consent for the new Weston Marsh Substation A will be sought separately from South Holland District Council (SHDC) under the Town and Country Planning Act 1990.”
They continue: “The scheme is expected to deliver meaningful benefits to the local area during the construction phase.
“It will provide jobs and opportunities for workers who will contribute directly to the local economy by staying in nearby hotels, purchasing goods from local shops, and making use of local services.
“This increased spending power can provide a valuable boost to businesses in the community.”
