A former Spalding restaurant and takeaway is poised to become a general store and off-licence, creating up to ten jobs.
China City Restaurant in Winsover Road closed last weekend and the lease has been taken on by Korwan Ahmad, director in two neighbouring stores – Winsover and Baltic.
He has made a premises licence application to South Holland District Council and hopes to open his latest shop in February.
“It’s going to be a general store with groceries and a fresh bakery,” Mr Ahmad said.
“There will be about six to eight people, maybe ten, new jobs.
“I’m trying to create jobs in the area. I want to give a future to people who are currently out of a job.”
The name for the new shop is as yet undecided, but both Capital and Oscar (Mr Ahmad is a theatre fan) are in the running.
He said: “The building is large and has quite a lot of potential.
“It will be open plan on the ground floor with a storage room where the kitchens are at the moment.”
He plans to try and retain the ornamental pond, which was a popular feature at the restaurant.
Mr Ahmad acknowledged that both Winsover and Baltic have been in trouble with Trading Standards in recent months. He says employees were sacked in the aftermath.
Anybody wishing to apply for a job in the new shop can leave their CV at either Winsover or Baltic, or email [email protected]
Representations about the premises licence application must be made to South Holland District Council’s licensing department by Tuesday.
