Garden project amid precept rise

Holbeach Parish Council is to put up its share of the council tax by 9.4 per cent while announcing future projects.

The change amounts to an increase of £6.03 for a band D property over the year or 50p a month.

The authority says it hopes to use the £244,340 it will collect from the precept – the share of the council tax it receives – on new projects for the town.

Vice chairman Sophie Hutchinson said: “All our committees, particularly finance, with the assistance of our parish clerk, have worked hard reviewing budgets for next year.

“As a council we have made savings in key areas of our regular expenditure, enabling us to increase our spend on projects that will directly benefit our parishioners.

“Plans for this year include a new jubilee garden in Carter’s Park, £5,000 for events, including the car show, Jubilee and Christmas Fayre and £10,000 for open spaces projects.

“We have also been able to budget £6,000 for grants to support community groups and projects that benefit our parishioners.”

One of those projects includes the creation of a Jubliee Garden in Carter’s Park which will be grown and maintained by a group of gardening volunteers. The idea came up as the council looks to take on work for Holbeach In Blooms after the previous volunteers stepped down.

“The garden will be located in the picnic area and will incorporate sensory planting, which was highly requested by the public in our survey last year,” Coun Hutchinson said. “We will be writing to businesses, plant wholesalers and growers to get donations to kick-start this project, but if members of the public are interested in volunteering to help with this and/or future gardening projects then please contact the clerk on [email protected] or call 01406 426739.”
