FA Trophy defeat for Spalding United at Gresley – but Holbeach United back on-song

Spalding United crashed out of the FA Trophy with a 4-1 defeat at Gresley on Saturday, while Holbeach United got back to winning ways with a 3-2 ChromaSport UCL Premier Division victory at Leicester Nirvana.

Starting with the Tulips, Evo-Stik NPL First Division South rivals Gresley proved too strong in the Preliminary Round clash.

A hat-trick from ex-Holbeach United striker Courtney Meade and a penalty from Pearson Mwanyongo accounted for the Tulips, who did pull one back through Cenk Acar (pen 80) make the score 3-1 at one stage.

Meanwhile, Holbeach bounced back from home defeats against Desborough and Yaxley to beat hosts Nirvana in a five-goal thriller.

A first-minute own goal gave the Tigers the perfect start, but Gurdeep Mudhar levelled on 25 minutes.

Jack Smith restored Holbeach’s advantage moments later, but it was 2-2 at half time thanks to another Leicester leveller from Suleiman Nassor (32).

The clincher came eight minutes into the second period as Tommy Treacher netted a header, but Holbeach’s task was made a little easier following a red card for a wild tackle on Adam Jackson.

Tom Roberts’ Tigers remain sixth in the table following the away success.

More on both games to follow.
