Elworthy claims club’s online championship

Matt Elworthy earned the top prize in Spalding Cycling Club’s virtual TT series but he was unable to make it a clean sweep in last week’s final round of the tournament.

Instead Ant Gough was the quickest to complete the course via the online cycling platform Zwift out of the 16 competitors that took part from their own homes.

With being unable to meet in person due to the lockdown, the Spalding club instead organised the online event where the competitors link up their exercise bikes at home to their computers and compete in time trials.

The latest event was again live streamed on YouTube with commentary from local professional rider Matt Ellis.

Despite Elworthy having picked up the first two victories in the series there were still local bragging rights on the line.

And it was Gough, of Velo One Cycling Team, who came out on top this time completing the virtual course in a time of 23mins 33secs.

Second place went to the previous winner Elworthy representing Boston Wheelers who recorded a fantastic time of 23mins 40escs.

Third place went to Spalding’s Elliot Stones (24:22) which was enough to secure him overall second in the series behind Elworthy while Neil Palmer was third overall.

Spalding Cycling Club are hoping their next event will be in person after the government announced that it’s hoped organised sport can resume from March 29.

A spokesman for the club said: “We are looking forward to the resumption of outdoor racing and group leisure riding from March 29.

“With the recent boom in cycling during the first and second lockdown why not join the town’s only British Cycling registered Club which is currently open to new and returning members of all abilities?”
