Easton: Lowly Spalding United are better than league position suggests

Boss Matt Easton reckons that Spalding United are in a false position in Evo-Stik NPL Division One East.

After suffering last-gasp heartache against high-flying Tadcaster Albion last Saturday (see page 37), the Tulips dropped down to 18th in the table – just one point off the foot.

However, the Tulips have just endured a November that saw them play a host of teams gunning for promotion.

December, on the other hand, serves up fixtures against fellow strugglers Belper Town, AFC Mansfield, Cleethorpes Town and, this Saturday, a trip to Stocksbridge Park Steels (3pm).

“I thought we did well last Saturday,” said Easton. “In the end, we were very disappointed to get nothing from the game.

“We worked much harder than in recent weeks and it was a 50/50 game – which isn’t bad for us against a team third in the league.

“However, if we’re not taking points against the leading sides, we need to get wins against the teams in and around us.

“Really, we need to be looking at getting two or three wins from our December games.

“I think that we’re much better than the table suggests and it’s time that we start proving it.

“If we don’t start winning this month, maybe I’ll have to have a bit of a re-think.

“We’ve played more than everybody in and around us at the bottom, so it’s important that we get points on the board.”

Saturday’s hosts Stocksbridge are one place above the Tulips, but have the same number of points.

Spalding could have Jack Brownell back in the squad, but fellow midfielder Kegan Everington has joined George Zuerner on the sidelines.
