Dream Dubai showing from Gedney Hill Golf Club pairing David and Rob

Gedney Hill Golf Club duo David Lord and Rob Newns finished a fantastic third at Grand Finals of the League to Dubai competition.

The pair travelled out to Dubai for the finals last Thursday and played three rounds of golf on three different courses in the United Arab Emirates.

Round one saw them take on the Arabian Ranches Course, where they enjoyed their best score of 38 points.

They then notched 35 points on the Jumeirah Fire Course in round two, before finishing with a third-round score of 33 points on the Jumeirah Earth course.

Close to 750 pairs originally entered the competition, with both players delighted that they achieved third place in the overall competition.

As well as their top performance as a team, Lord – who described the trip as a “fabulous experience” – also enjoyed the added bonus of being in the winning team on a nine-hole floodlit challenge played at Dubai Creek Golf Club.

The pair qualified for the event by playing in the Southern Regional final back in October, which was held at Tudor Park Marriott Hotel and Country Club in Maidstone, Kent.

It was extremely close at the top of the leaderboard, with only four points separating the top 15 pairs.

  • Spalding Golf Club’s senior and ladies’ sections joined forces last Wednesday for their annual early season get together – and raised £200 for charity in the process.

After the success of last year’s event it was decided to again use the format of a Texas Scramble, with two ladies and two seniors making up the teams.

A total of 64 players took part, making up 16 teams. The winning team of Albert Jacobs, Rod Filby, Jacquie Clare and Pam Smith came out on top with a net score of 64.7. In second place were Neil

Wilkinson, John Sharrocks, Ruth Atkins and Rowena Hughes on 65.2, with third place going to Howard Greaves, Dave Halfteck, Gill Dewhurst and Jenny Pipe (65.4).

The raffle raised £200, with the proceeds being split equally between the two captain’s charities.
