Derby delight for in-form Spalding ladies

In-form Spalding Golf Club ladies earned a fine 3-1 home success over Lincolnshire rivals Sleaford.

Chris Vickers and Avril Norton (1 down) were the only duo to suffer defeat for Spalding, with Jenny Wilson and Angela Roper (5&4), Millie Thorold and Theresa Starbuck (1up) and Anne Ellis and Chris Leggett (2up) all winners.

  • Spalding’s ladies secured a fine 4-0 win in a friendly match against neighbours Gedney Hill at the Surfleet course.

Wins came from Jenny Wilson and Millie Thorold (4&3), Chris Vickers and Sybil Thorpe (3&2), Deborah Ellis and Mary Gould (3&2) and Eileen Bridge and Yvonne Greaves (4&3).

  • Spalding ladies’ ‘A’ team earned a 2-2 draw from their trip to their counterparts Sleaford.

Angela Roper and Elizabeth Holbrook were Spalding’s sole winners (3&2), while both Ruth Atkin and Matilde Kedzlie and Paula Brown and Avril Norton halved.

Elaine Hancock and Diane Platt were the sole Spalding losers (3&4).

  •  The annual Ping Day Stableford competition was entered by 12 teams of two ladies (playing on 3/4 handicap).

Barbara Newcombe and Jennifer Pipe emerged victorious with 34 points, ahead of Anne Ellis and Jean White in second spot with 33 points.
Anita Cross and Maureen Orwell were edged into third on countback after also scoring 33 points.

  • Some 27 teams of four from Lincolnshire and the surrounding counties entered Spalding Ladies’ Spring Am-Am.

The winners were Pat Silburn, Ros Riley and Karen Johnson from Oundle Golf Club, with Ann Parkin from Peterborough Milton, on a total of 80 points.

Second, on countback were Millie and Hannah Thorold from Spalding together with Pat Arnold from King’s Lynn and Joyce Sergeant from Peterborough Milton with 78 points.

Hot on their heels in third spot were Mags McArdle and Jackie Bailey-Scott from Spalding, together with Maggie Clarkson from King’s Lynn and Maria Taylor-Vassall from Tydd St Giles with 78.

Elaine Brown, Mollie Plowright, Joanne Wheatley and Shirley Caruth from Burghley Park were just behind in fourth on 77 points.

All prizes were presented by Spalding’s lady captain Jennifer Wilson.
