Ian Ford scored a superb 41 Stableford points to win one of Spalding Golf Club’s extremely popular Burton Cup competition.

The 23-handicapper held off the challenge of over 150 other golfers to take the much coveted trophy by a single point at the Surfleet course.

Paul Green (16 handicap) just edged second spot on countback from John Goode (16) after both scored 40 points.

They were just ahead of John Spencer (15) in fourth place, also on countback, from Dan Hines, Lloyd Chatham, Chris Moxon and Wayne Flowers. All five scored 39 points.

The top four finishers all received handicap reductions.

Other leading scores: 38pts – David Inglis, Lawrie Haley, John Reynolds; 37pts – Shawn Huggins, Mark Cooley, Trevor Overson, David Colwell, Simon Rothwell and Hugo Kedzlie.

Trevor Laud holed his third shot for an eagle three on the par five 13th hole, but just failed to feature on the leaderboard.

  •  Spalding’s mixed team secured an impressive 6-4 win over their counterparts from Kings Lynn GC recently.

Club and Lady captain Peter Bridge and Jenny Wilson led from the front with a 2&1 triumph, with further wins coming from Rod Filby and Elaine Hancock (4&3), Tony Holbrook and Ruth Atkins (5&3), Keith Williams and Mags McArdle (3&1), Bob Pearson and Eileen Bridge (2up) and Chris Hancock and Theresa Starbuck (1up).

  •  A social match played at the tree-lined course at King’s Lynn resulted in a 5.5-0.5 defeat for Spalding.

The only pair to stave off defeat were Peter Bridge and Chris Huggins, who halved their game.

  • Spalding’s third team also lost their social match by the same 5.5-0.5 score against their counterparts at Sleaford GC. Ben Blom and Graham Rudkin halved their game to just avoid a clean sweep for the home team.
