Day move for town forces event

Spalding’s annual celebration as part of Armed Forces Week is to move days.

This year it runs from June 22 to Armed Forces Day which is on Saturday, June 29.

In previous years Spalding’s Armed Forces Day Parade has been held on a Tuesday alongside Spalding Market in the hope of attracting more members of the armed services.

But this year it will join others in parading on the Saturday of Armed Forces Day itself.

There will be special guests leading this year’s parade in 20 veteran bikers who will be travelling from visiting battlefields in France.

The event is organised in Spalding by the town’s branch of the Royal British Legion.

Its chairman Jan Whitbourn said: “Preparations are coming together to celebrate this year’s Armed Forces Day Parade.

“We try to ensure this parade is memorable for all our armed forces, veterans, cadets and all our young people from organisations who come to join us when they can, in the town centre.

“If any of your young students/cadets/Brownies/Cubs/Scouts/Guide or schools who would like to be part of this event, please contact me asap.

“We do need numbers for our celebration after the event.

“There will be a short service led by our vicar with a minute’s silence for us to remember the sacrifices made on our behalf over the years.

“You will see school children joining in and singing alongside many other organisations and young cadets.

“Adam Patman will sing as our finale for the morning service; we will sing together the National Anthem which will end our moments of remembrance for Armed Forces Day.

“We very much hope that you will join us so we can all show our appreciation and remember those perhaps in our own families and the conflicts they fought in.”
