‘Cultural vandalism’ turned down

A bid to turn a grade II listed building in Spalding into a home for 16 people was branded ‘cultural vandalism’ as planners turned it down.

A developer had wanted to turn The Grange in Pinchbeck Road into a House for Multiple Occupation (HMO).

But South Holland District Council’s Planning Committee gave the application short shift last week.

“It’s another example of cultural vandalism,” Coun Christine Lawton said. “We have very little grade II listed buildings in this town and we’re happy to trash them.

“It’s outrageous.”

The plans and consent to change a listed building were swiftly rejected by councillors.

Planning chairman James Avery said: “It’s a lovely building that is starting to show its age and it’s in a state of disrepair, but cultural vandalism would be spot on in if we were to ever to think of approving this as a HMO.”
