Cricket round-up: Town play waiting game after defeat, Watson stars with 5-6 in Spalding 3rd win

Spalding Town will finish in the bottom two of the Lincs ECB Premier Division this season after losing by a 118 runs at Nettleham on Saturday.

In this season’s penultimate round of fixtures, Town bowled out their hosts for 210 at Gorse Lane, before Grantham knocked them over for just 92.

With a maximum of two sides able to be relegated depending on the winners of the two leagues that feed into the division, Spalding now face a wait to see if they will stay up or not.

They will finish their season with a home game against Scunthorpe Town, which will get underway at the slightly later time of noon on Saturday.

Whatever happens, they will finish 11th in the 12-team division, while Scunthorpe are still in the mix to clinch a third-placed finish.

  • Spalding Town 3rd were the only South Holland side to play to a conclusion over the weekend as the rainfall ripped through a host of fixtures.

In Division Two, they defeated Freiston 2nd by six wickets at Seas End Hall on Sunday.

After losing the toss, Town’s third string bowled out their visitors for 83 in just under 40 overs as Joseph Watson starred with incredible figures of 5-6.

Stewart Kirtley (19), Michael Stapleton (16) and Ben Newton (14) were the top scores for Freiston, who perhaps regretted their choice to bat after winning the toss.

Watson, aided by Billy Gallagher (2-9), George Morris (1-4) and Sonal Martin (1-9), ripped through their batting line-up and gave their side a big chance to seal a welcome win.

And the batsman duly delivered in reply, with Morris (24 not out), Thomas Preston (22) and Martin (13 not out) steering them to 84-4 in 26.1 overs.

Up in the Premier Division, Moulton Harrox reached 32-1 before the rain came and saw their clash at Boston abandoned.

Long Sutton’s home date with Sleaford 2nd, meanwhile, was abandoned without a ball being bowled.

It was the same story for Spalding Town 2nd and Moulton Harrox 2nd in Division One, as their South Holland derby failed to get started due to the heavy rainfall in the area.
