Cox’s Sunday best secures a triple triumph at Welland Yacht Club

On-song Alan Cox sailed to a clean-sweep of three victories at Welland Yacht Club on Sunday.

Autumn sunshine greeted the six competitors for the first race of the day, race five in the Sunday Points Series.

With Andy Agar and Brian Cobb making the most of the start, followed by Ros Nickols, Alan Cox, the pairing of Tom and Simon Bell and Neal Tack and Rebecca Slator.

As the fleet tacked its way up the course, Agar misjudged his course and collided with Nickols, who had right of way.

The ensuing penalty turns put him back down the fleet.

On the run back down to the club house, Cobb couldn’t make the most of the ever shifting breeze and was soon passed by Cox then Nickols. With Agar soon making up places.

At the back of the fleet, the two double handers were still trying to keep within handicap distance of the leaders.

During the second lap Cox was still out in front, while Agar had moved up to second ahead of the Bell brothers in third on the water.

Once handicaps were applied, Cox would hold the win from the Bells in second and Nickols in third.

The afternoon saw rounds four and five of the Personal Handicap Series. Again, six boats took to the start – but, with two boats declared over the line at the start, only one heard the recall and did their penalty return back over the line. The other would be given a 30 second penalty at the end of the race.

Once the personal handicaps were applied, Cox would again take the win from Cobb, with Agar third.

Only four boats took to the start for round five, which was the final race of the day.

With the wind dying away towards the end of the first lap, the Bell brothers decided to call it a day and take a lap time, too.

Meanwhile, Agar led the second lap from Cox, followed by Tack and Slator.

The breeze picked up a little towards the end allowing Cox to take his third win of the day from Agar second, Tack and Slator third.
